Appreciating the special beauty of the season

The author as a child enjoying a winter day

Despite having a December birthday, I am not generally a fan of cold weather. As soon as New Year’s Eve passes, I simply do not have much use for the remainder of the winter season with its gray days, mornings that make me want to stay in bed, and slippery roads.

However, for the past week I can say that I have truly enjoyed the snowstorm that Mother Nature provided just in time to give my youngest daughter an extra week of Christmas break.

At first I worried that the predicted freezing rain would weigh down the power lines and we’d lose electricity. While we have a fireplace (which currently needs repair) and a gas oven and gas water heater, with temperatures in the teens and twenties over the course of a week or more, we’d be in trouble. As it turned out, we had less ice and more snow with no electricity outages in our area.

Once the worry was gone, I was free to enjoy the break in routine. Usually, I have to go into the office twice a week but with school out and the roads treacherous, I could work from home all week. And the week was pleasant. My older daughter had several days off work and we started a jigsaw puzzle on the dining room table which we pieced together every night after work.

I baked cookies and took our puppy Rose out several times a day to get some…
